Masamune: Before Yashiki was Yashiki, he was Kujou Masamune. Undoing a seal on a malicious entity caused him to lose his memories. He since regained them and is aware of who he once was, but rejects "that person." Masamune was an exceptionally pragmatic individual – the kind of person that sacrificed hundreds of lives for the sake of protecting the world itself.
But those sacrificed were torn to pieces both mentally and physically. So, he can't imagine himself making the same decisions; he honestly can't understand or sympathize with who he was. However, he accepts the responsibility of what his past-self did. So, he may not call himself "Kujou Masamune" anymore, but he will bear the sins that "he" had committed.
It does sometimes leave him in a state of depression and helplessness, but he knows his pain is nothing compared to those hurt by "his" actions. He refuses to ask for help; he refuses to ask for forgiveness. Furthermore, the level of guilt he constantly feels makes him take responsibility for situations that have nothing to do with him, nor directly caused by anything that he did.
Yashiki just views his existence as one that should be in service to others until he dies.
Sympathetic: He does unbelievably stupid things due to his self-sacrificing and overly forgiving nature. Like, he encounters vengeful spirits and entities that want to utterly destroy him, but he forgives and accepts them for how they are and attempts to find a way for them to pass on peacefully. However, in doing so, he puts himself in extreme danger where he could possibly die – and he is terrified of dying. Yet he does so again and again, because he does not want those spirits to be left with no one that can understand or relieve their suffering.
It isn't just the supernatural that he acts this way to, either. He'll willingly sacrifice his life for pretty much anyone that he happens to meet. And, yes, he will quite literally ignore his own self-preservation instincts in order to help someone. But he'll never ask for anything in return. He's entitled to some reward because he saved them. They're alive and well; they're able to live happy, normal lives. What else could he ask for?
This doesn't mean that he doesn't get annoyed or frustrated with people. He curbs his tongue; he does what he can to spare their feelings even if they're getting on his last nerve. Only with those that he feels particularly close to does he actually snap and offer a sharp word.
Finally, while his well of sympathy is unimaginably deep as soon as it dries up, he could not care less what happens to the person. He wouldn't care if they died, or if they died horribly. Like, Yashiki'd be disturbed by the level of violence and malice, but the fact that they were murdered? Not so much. However, this only applies to living humans. For the supernatural, he will always have infinite patience and understanding.
Bizarre: So, yes, he's very kind and warm; people feel comfortable with venting their problems to him because he always thinks the best of whoever it is. He is still a very weird person to know.
Kujou Masamune was a recluse. He didn't like to interact with anyone outside of his family. This left Yashiki with little foundation to build his own social skills and an understanding of people that is very limited. Most of the time, Yashiki is conscious of this.
It doesn't help that he's an empath. He can sometimes feel people's emotions, but their reactions are different than what he assumes they will be. Understanding their emotions doesn't mean understanding who they are; he acknowledges this. He knows he is just out of step from everyone else and it honestly sometimes stresses him out.
But he is also weird in general.
Like, Yashiki decides to decorate one room of Kujou Manor with all the items that he acquired. These items included a tarp covered in the blood of victims and a photograph of a spirit that he considers coy and endearing [image, cw: body horror]. He thinks he'll invite everyone over for a party in the room, and feels excited about it.
This is not to mention that he acquires a bottle of honey during one investigation. Said honey most likely was harvested from the bodies of humans turned into bee-hives by the spirit. But he only thinks that since honey never goes bad, he should use it on his toast in the morning.
So, due to how quiet and anxious he is, people do get he's very socially awkward and clumsy, but just don't realize how eccentric he can be.
Suitability: Yashiki has dealt with a multitude of spirits and entities that have wanted to violently kill him. While he is terrified of them hurting him, he is responding more to their rage and malicious intent rather than how they look. The body horror aspect of transformations would not disturb him; he would still feel inclined (if not compelled) to sync with people so that he could return them to their senses – should an event like the first occur. His first thought in a crisis is always how can he help as many people as possible.
Syncing in general would not be too much of an issue for him. It's just that he would fret and worry if people would be all right with syncing with a person like himself. Not just an empath, but an "old man." He'd worry that people would find him to be some meddling adult, or grifter attempting to use them. Seriously, it almost would be better if he didn't know what syncing was, because he reaches out for people in general to offer them support through a hand on their shoulder, or the equivalent there of. But when he's able to build up enough courage to reach out, he'll be all right.
To be honest, he would probably attempt to befriend Malachite and Aurora, if possible. His feelings towards the supernatural, to the inhuman, is to want to make sure that they don't feel like they are alone in their struggles. He'd want to come to hear more of their concerns, their upsets, and also their laughter and dreams. He'd feel a great sense of enjoyment out of just talking to them and hearing their thoughts on the gembonded, and their own existence. It's sad, but he'd feel more at ease dealing with the gems than the gembonded humans.
Condition upon arrival: Healthy – to the surprise of everyone.
Abilities:
Empathy. Originally, it was thought that the spirits were showing Yashiki visions of how they died or what tragedy had occurred. However, it is later revealed that is his own spiritual ability. He can see visions of the past in places that have strong emotions tied with them. Not only that but he gleans hints as to what he should do based on the thoughts and feelings that he hears from those around him. He is exceptionally sensitive to spirits and only sometimes can read humans. But that is because he tends to close himself off to people and more open to trying to understand and communicate with the supernatural. The other drawback is he can fully experience what happened to the person, which isn't a fun time for anyone.
In extreme stress situations, he has dissociated and temporarily became Kujo Masamune in order to find the answer of what they should do to survive.
Supernatural sight. He sometimes can see through the glamor that the supernatural attempt to put up in order to hide themselves or objects that they don't want him finding. In high stress situations, he is able to see through most illusions that are around him. This also isn't something that he can readily activate and seems to be more of a defensive response than constantly active.
Curse-resistant. Yashiki is fairly resistant to curses and hypnosis. To put it into perspective, it takes roughly five years for Mary’s curse to erase all his memories. Most individuals that are cursed only last a few weeks, at best. Also, all Mark Bearers become drowsy and absentminded when close to the spirit that cursed them (which naturally makes it easier to kill them), but he is able to remain relatively clear-headed and even form a plan on how to fight back.
Supernatural knowledge. He has considerable knowledge of the occult. It isn’t necessarily something that he wants to have, but boy does he have it. When attempting to come up with countermeasures for Mary, he traveled abroad to investigate extensively on anything related to the supernatural. And after the events of Death Mark, he is still attempting to figure out what to do with the cursed object and still doing massive amount of research.
